Movement of cells are important since some cells depends on movement to carry out its major function. For example, sperm cells need to move from one place to another place to carry out reproduction. Movement of cells are supported by cytoskeleton system of the cells. The cyctoskeleton system are composed of microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments. However, for unicellular organisms such as Paramecium, the movement of cells are regulated through cilia or flagella. Cilia can be found in a large quantity on the plasma membrane of the organisms. They move around by paddling back and forth like a boat. They surrounded the plasma membrane of unicellular organisms. Flagella could be found on independent cells like sperm cells. Plastids, is not the correct answer. Plastids are one of the plant organelles (Campbell, pg. 111). Different plastids have different color. Chloroplast is a green plastids while amyplast is a colorless plastids (Campbell, pg. 111; Citovsky, Lecture 10). The major function of plastids is storage of starch (Campbell, pg. 70). Since the major function of plastids is not about movement of cells, Choice C is not a correct answer.
Choice D. Centrioles, is the correct answer. Centrioles are usually paired up to form centrosome. Every centrioles will have 9 sets of triplet microtubules arranged in a circle (Campbell, pg. 114). Centrosome is the place where microtubules synthesized from (Citovsky, Lecture 11). If the centrioles are absent from the cell, there will be no microtubules synthesized in the cell. Since microtubules are the major component of flagella and cilia, the absence of centrioles will not allow cell to form cilia or flagella.
Choice E. Chloroplasts, is not the correct answer. Chloroplasts are green plastids that could be found in plant cell. It converts the sunlight into chemical energy which could be stored in the plant (Citovsky, Lecture 10). They are the organelles that perform photosynthesis and have a major role in ATP production (Campbell, pg. 175). Since the major function of chloroplasts is ATP production, Choice E will not be the correct
