In this essay, we will be comparing the similarities and differences in two films: The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) by Director Walter Salles, and End of Watch (2012) by director David Ayer. The genres of the two films are similar yet different. The Motorcycle Diaries is a biographical drama about the journey and written memoir of Ernesto Guevara. In the movie Guevara (Gael Garcia Bernal) travels through Latin America with his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo De La Serna). The ethical dilemmas encountered by the men were centered on bringing justice to the people. During their travels, Ernesto and Alberto witnessed many injustices whether it was the displaced communist couple trying to get a job at the Anaconda Mining Co. after having their land taken, the indigenous people of Machu Piccho, Peru who also had their land taken or the patients at the Leprosarium who were segregated due to their illnesses. Similarly, the officers in End of Watch were fighting their own battle to protect innocent lives against the criminals in South LA. Brian and Mike found themselves in dangerous situations, but they try to stay true to the badge, yet they bend the rules in order to get their job done. Brian and Mike were faced with good cop bad cop situations while dealing with gangsters, the Sinaloa cartel, and your typical drug addicts. Some of the artistic elements in the movies are very much alike. Ernesto and Alberto traveled by motorcycle and Brian and Mike rode in their patrol cars. In The Motorcycle Diaries, director Walter Salles took us on a journey between two men across one continent by motorcycle. The beautiful landscapes in the film had the audience feel as though they were part of the journey. While the ethical issues in The Motorcycle Diaries dealt with the battle of equality for all, in End of Watch, the men fought to protect the streets of LA against criminals. Ernesto and Alberto fought to help people, but in the end Brian and Mike were fighting for their lives. The difference and artistic elements were seen right from the start. The Motorcycle Diaries was a Spanish biographical adventure film and End of Watch was more of a dramatic action-packed crime film. The cultural themes in the film also share differences. Ernesto and Alberto were from South America so it was natural that they would feel strongly for the rights of their people. End of Watch was full of diversity. Brian was white and Mike was Mexican. The film also portrayed the turf wars among black and Hispanic gangs. Ernesto had a profound impact on many people. At the start of their journey, he was looking for adventure and a change of scenery with his friend, but towards the end, he was able to have Alberto be just as compassionate as he was towards his cause. Although Brian loved his job, he put his life on the line for his own beliefs and Mike tried to avoid dangerous situations until kids were involved because he was a father. The political differences among the films were the fact that from the beginning, not all characters were in an authoritative position. All characters fought for a good cause, however only Brian and Mike were in a legal position
