The short story: ”The Dress” is written by Julia Darling in 2006. The story is about a mother living alone with her two daughters called Flora and Rachel. It tells about their tense relationship and how it all climaxes at the mother’s birthday party just because of a dress.
Being a mother living alone with her family will never be easy. You will have a lot of things to take care of. Children always need a lot of attention and when there for instance is no father then the mother has to give extra much attention to her children. She has two daughters and she has a lot of trouble combining her job and her family life. It is not only Flora and Rachel that need attention. The mother also really needs attention. She uses very much time on her job speaking with people who are in a bad mood and it infects her everyday life. She is close to her 40-year old birthday and is looking very much forward to it. She need to feel loved. The story also says: “She felt sorry for herself. All day she had sat with tearful needy people. It was her birthday, and she wanted to relax. She wanted to feel loved.”
Rachel is also looking forward to her mother’s birthday. She buys a dress, which she really wanted to wear on her mother’s birthday party. Flora, Rachel’s sister, steals the dress. She has an Italian boyfriend and she wants to impress him. She knows that Rachel wants to make her mother happy with the dress but she does not care about Rachel, her mother or the family in general. The mother just wants a good evening and first of all she wants to feel loved. She does not recognize why the atmosphere is so strained. Even worse than it used to be. Rachel is very angry and says in front of them all that Flora had taken her dress but Flora just acts like she does not know what she is talking about. The mother truly under-stands nothing. She does not know anything about how it is going on in her family. She uses too much time on her job. She does not know how the relationship is between her two daughters. The problem is not just that she does not know how they feel. The problem is that she thinks that they feel fine and expects that they are able to give her a perfect birthday party.
These two sisters, maybe twins because they can fit each other’s clothes, are not able to celebrate their mother in a respectable way.
