The Most Preventable Teratogen

Decent Essays
Although the list of environmental hazards is backed by generations of observations and research, the order of “preventability” is probably highly subjective. Different women have different SES, habits, physical conditions, mental status, living environment, partners (or lack thereof), and above all, knowledge of these teratogens. Consequently, what feels easy for one might be the most onerous for another; and what is carefully avoided by one might be entirely overlooked by another.
The reason why I personally feel caffeine is the most preventable teratogen is because one could easily find decaffed drinks as alternatives. And it takes very little effort to cut back on coffee or tea, especially knowing that they may cause low birth weight (Berk,

Living Downstream by Sandra Steingraber illustrates the vast effects of environmental pollutants on the human body. As a biologist and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber is able to eloquently execute this story because the topic is so relatable to her life. The strong association and correlation between the environment and our DNA shows so much about the ignorance of the human population and our stupidity of not acting to make a change. Although we are at fault for placing these chemicals into the environment, we still blame our faulty genetic repair mechanisms for the cancer instead of the environmental carcinogens that we’ve put into the land, the air and the water.…

In her book Living Downstream, Sandra Steingraber blends her narrative writing style with scientific research and data to provide an accessible account of the cancer epidemic in the United States and its link to the environment. It is Steingraber’s belief that it is essential for human beings to not only question, but also understand how a lifetime of incremental exposures to chemicals like DDT, PCBs, and atrazine increase an individual’s risks of developing cancer at some point in their life. Throughout the course of the book Steingraber balances her personal experience growing up in rural Tazwell County Illinois, her diagnosis with bladder cancer in her early twenties, and how her environmental exposure to certain industrial and agricultural…

(2). The table lists various forms a diseases, pollutants, social and behavioral factors, medicinal drugs, and psychoactive drugs that have harmful effects to the fetus. For example, its gives many medicinal drugs that may harm the fetus with the harmful effects listed right next to them. It also lists a preventative measure which in this case states “Avoid all medicines, whether prescription or over the counter, during pregnancy unless given by a medical professional who knows recent research on teratogens”(pg.…

Fetal Abuse and Teratogens After reading the article about the possible legal ramifications for prenatal abuse, and teratogens in the book, I can see both sides of the argument. The concept behind DeJesus ' prosecution is often referred to as "fetal rights": the notion that unborn babies deserve the same legal protections as children (“Fetal Abuse”). Multiple women have been charged and went to jail for taking drugs while pregnant and giving birth to babies who test positive for the drug. From the outside looking in, it seems to me that any pregnant woman would avoid any possible teratogen, especially drugs. Women could justly be prosecuted for intentially doing illegal drugs while pregnant;regardless of whether or not the child is born…

Drinking alcohol can be no joke when knowing a person is pregnant. A teratogen is a drug or other substance capable of interfering with the development of an embryo fetus that may lead to birth defects or developmental malformations [1]. It could be very useful when someone has consumed alcohol while pregnant. Now, if I were to have seen someone consume alcohol and smoking a cigarette at a bar, seeing that they are a couple months pregnant, I would walk up to her and tell her my concerns. Since she smiled at me, I would walk over to her and start small talk.…

The effects of environmental influences are wide-ranging depending on the prevailing environmental factors. A particular stage of development fails to take place normally, especially the critical period when cells multiply and enlarge to form organs. Prenatal development is critical in determining the health and structure of a newborn. For example, exposure to chemicals, radioactive material, and drugs among other hazardous conditions may lead to failure in development of some body parts, stunted growth in babies as well as poor cognitive development. Severe exposure can lead to miscarriage or death during and immediately after birth (Hepper 2005).…
