This was a defining moment in my life for the obvious reasons of it being a traumatic incident, but for me what makes it a defining is the support I received from my community. It was right before my high school graduation that I came home to a locked door. I knocked and rang the bell for 15 minutes and no one answered despite the fact that I could hear everyone moving about the house. My friend who had dropped me off waited to see if someone would let me in. After what seemed like an eternity, he called me back to the car and took me back to school. My drama teacher, Mr. Martin, risked his job by allowing me to crash on his couch for the weekend. When school resumed the following week, my teachers brought me into a meeting where they told me they were connecting me to a local LGBTQ+ youth homeless shelter. I went to the shelter who connected with students at Rollins College. I had already been accepted to Rollins so they were working in tandem to have me housed until I could live in the dorms in the fall. Through the support of the shelter, my high school teachers, my college professors, and my classmates I was ready to not only survive but thrive in
