As emperor of Rome, he builds himself a huge palace, in which he does not visit all the rooms before his death (Denora, 2016). Nero’s palace demonstrated the capabilities of those in power and has influenced bored billionaires to run for modern-day offices to find ways to use their money, such as building a very large wall. Along with his “huge” palace, he creates the Colossus of Nero (Denora, 2016). The Colossus of Nero was a 30 meter tall bronze statue of himself, which was built near his palace, so he could see himself every day (Denora, 2016). Nero proves that narcissism is not a good trait of a leader. Electing Nero is just like electing someone who cares more about his hair than the life of refugees. Nero is often associated with the term “fiddled while Rome burned” because Rome was engulfed in flames for six days and Nero did not do anything to control the fire, minimize the damage, or make his citizens feel safe, which was very different from the rule of Augustus (Denora, 2016). After the fire, he built Rome in a way that he enjoyed more and made it great again. He blames someone else for the fire, even though they were probably not involved (Denora, 2016). Some of Caesar’s influences, like the calendar and the autopsy, can be felt today, but other aspects, such as Latin, which is a rarely spoken language, are outdated. Caesarian section surgeries are performed daily, but the process has greatly evolved with the improvements in science and technology. Augustus’ reforms have evolved with time, but the basis of the ideas can still be felt. Police and fire departments, protection for world leaders, and the idea of the emperor leading the army are part of 21st century living in the western world. Nero’s influence can be seen in the current election for President of the United States, but he is mostly known for being a bad emperor and is therefore not very influential in any other aspects besides the 2016 election.
