My Career Teacher: The Importance For My Future Career Teaching

Improved Essays
During my CSL I have learned four very important things that I will use every day in my teaching career. I learned the importance of knowing students names and the importance of not ignoring the little things. I also learned that it is okay to tell students their work is not good enough and that having high expectations for students will help them grow as learners. Of course I have learned many other small things, but the above mentioned four are in my opinion the most influential for my future career teaching.

My first day of CSL, I quickly realized that I will be teaching multiple different classes every day. This means that I need to know more than one hundred different students, their names, their faces, and how they learn. The big problem

My first day teaching my grade sixes a language lesson I posed a question to the group and I received responses as you would expect. The one thing I did not expect was students giving me answers that were not their best. At the beginning of the lesson I was hesitant to correct students in front of the class but as the class went on their answers were not getting any better. I wanted the students to have to do some thinking so the next answer I received that was not quality I responded with “do you think that sounds like a grade six answer? In grade six we need to think deeper and try to use more effective language in our writing.” The class then got very quiet and my AT seemed impressed. Immediately after the responses I was getting about the writing we were analyzing blew me away. I could not get over how much they knew, but they needed to be pushed to be able to articulate their thinking. Now when I’m doing anything with students I ask them if they are doing their best work. It seems to be working well in getting them to delivery quality …show more content…
I spend a portion of my day in the kindergarten class and I have learned many things about how kinders function as a result. The most important being that kinders need to understand what you expect of them so that they behave accordingly. They are not too young to understand what being quiet means or what it means to sit still for a few minutes. They simply need to be expected to do so. The first time I was with the kindergarten class we had to walk to the library and they did not walk quietly or even walk at all. Their teacher then decided to repeat our walk to the library until the students learn that there is a specific way in which we walk around the school. They had to do the walk three times, but by the end of the exercise all students followed the rules. Excusing them because of their age will not help them develop life skills; it will simply set them back for their future. Another example of how raising expectations will help students achieve happened with my grade four/five class. We had them do some writing about their science experiment and some submitted work written in pen, marker, or crayon. Some did not feel that they should follow the lines, and some felt no need to write anything worth reading. After receiving this unacceptable work we decided that we needed to have a checklist for students to follow when

Focusing on the positive encouraged them more, asking for their thoughts was another positive because they figured it out themselves and took pride in this achievement. Having them focus on the important learning targets, oral conversation instead of written commentary from me. Proving suggestions allowed them to think critically about what they were doing. They would compare their work to the task given, and describe their work, express freely their observation, and in an open forum with…

My personal philosophy on Career and Technical Education (CTE), comes from my life’s professional experience of working in Emergency Medicine and working with CTE programs. I believe that CTE prepares secondary and postsecondary students of all diverse backgrounds to obtain gainful employment and creates an ultimate experience of knowledge and development. I have had the opportunity to work in a CTE field of healthcare for my adult life. I believe there is no better educational system to have real measurable growth for many students than CTE. Many of the students and graduates I have had the opportunity to work with would have never had the chance for personal and financial growth if it were not for a CTE programs.…

Educating Esme is a story of a teacher’s thoughts, teachings and life before and during her first year teaching in Chicago. The book begins with her talking of her mentor and how she taught her to love the children and jump in and take charge. Madame Esme as she likes to be called lands a job at an enter city Chicago public school, she begins the time before school starts with ideas for a story book festival that gets shot down and with a battle for her “not legal” name to be her formal name at the school. She bumps heads with the principal in this area, yet he wants her to be at his beck and call, calling all hours and doing tons of extra paper work for him. I love that she has so much excitement in setting up her room and making it her own, she goes into such detail about the boards she makes and how proud she is for that first day.…

Kids should be seen and not heard. This is an ancient philosophy that has been long since given up... or has it? Children are taught as soon as possible not to be disruptive or loud. If any kids don’t conform to these rules, they are disciplined. Most of the time this works, but if they continue to act outside of hips and lips and keep-it-quiet, the first assumption is something must be wrong with them.…

Wide spectrum of abilities: Having a inclusive class with a wide range of children and abilities could also cause a problem when supporting learning activities, ensuring that all children are engaged, involved and fully understand the task that has been set. This can be dealt with by splitting the children in to ability based groups and providing the appropriate work for each group and setting achievable targets. By encouraging the higher ability children to help those struggling will help keep the class working at a similar pace.…

On two seperate occassions this past week mistakes were made during lessons. I made a mistake on an assessment paper and copied the wrong side of the quiz and Mrs. Doss made a mistake and copied the wrong set of words for the entire class during word study. It really helped having 2 people in the classroom so new copies could be made and brought in ASAP. We were both able to laugh about it later in the day and realized we both were having a rough morning. I know that in a normal classroom you wont always have 2 people or a teachers aide to be able to fix mistakes.…

The 2nd grade classroom of Jody Craddock-Iselin has 20 students and each of them has their own personality. I have been observing this class every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. where I am learning so much about how to teach. I have taught two whole group lessons where I have learned that sometimes you have to teach on the student’s level to help them learn and understand the lesson better. I also have got the opportunity to teach a guided reading lesson which has helped me to understand students on different levels of the reading scale. I think that I am doing well in this class and I am learning so much from my teacher.…

Many things have changed since I was little, but I do agree that many children going into kindergarten did not know anything when they started kindergarten. Many parent’s that I have spoke with said that, that was the reason why their child went into kindergarten so that they could learn things and be ready for first grade. From this introduction, what they believed in order for a child to be successful is that a child should have primary cognitive skills (Touch, 2013, p.xiii). Now they are saying that, “what matters most in a child’s development..is not how much information we can stuff into [their] brain in the first few years… Instead, help [them] develop a very different set of qualities…. Like, persistence, self-control, curiosity,…

The essential education needed to become a career and technical education teacher (CTE) is a Bachelor’s Degree with some work experience in the field of teaching. Public school teachers usually need a state certificate or license. You would need to take several different classes in college while working towards your degree such as Education and Training, Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, and Math and Science completed in an accredited teacher education program (Career/Technical Education Teachers, Middle School). Not only do you need the education but good skills, experience, and personality traits, because how could animals hunt without learning and experiencing it first? Entry level teachers usually have previous exposure to teaching younger children as student teachers, interns, substitutes and teacher aides.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…
