Argumentative Essay About Space Exploration

The cosmos are a timeless collection of space and stars. It’s our home and it’s our Earth’s home. It holds the key to our survival, the sun. It it both where we came from and where we are going. The universe is all that we have, and human kind has developed the ability to explore it. But the real question is if we should. Some issues should be considered when it comes to space exploration, and those are economics, ethics, and science. These three things are the most important factors to consider. The economic effect from space exploration is an important factor to consider. Technology is expensive and the amount of money it takes to pay for the research, salaries, materials, and scientists adds up. And a question raised is who pays for it since, “ More nations are talking about and wanting to get into the manned space act. India, Russia, China, and the European Space Agency” (Livingston). But space travel is a bigger issue than one single nation. According to Michael Collins, one of the first astronauts to go to space, he believes, “ That all countries must begin thinking of solutions to their problems which would benefit the entire globe, not simply their own national interests” (Collins). The national interests of most nations happens to revolve around economics, and non nation wants to pay despite the fact that space exploration would benefit the entire globe. Nations that are interested in space should consider that economic struggles are a short term problem compared to the timeless benefit space exploration would have. Nations should consider economics as a factor, but it should not stop them from going to space because exploration is more important than money. Ethics is an important factor that should be considered in space exploration. Humans have been exploring our own planet for centuries, and some may say that, “We do not have a very good track record in protecting our planet home” (McLean). But humans have learned from our mistakes on Earth, and if we go into space with consequences in mind, we will not repeat the past. In the past when Europeans came to America they killed thousands of Natives with diseases, and in the future that is something we must be weary about repeating going forward. The universe as been there as long as we know, and doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Any knowledge gained by going into space will be utilized by future citizens of Earth for generations. Knowledge of space allows humankind to understand more than just our world, it allows humankind to learn about the infinite space Earth floats through. Earth will change and is changing, but the universe will be there forever. According the astronaut Michael Collins, if people “could see their planet from a distance of - 100,000 miles, their outlook would be fundamentally changed. That all-important border would be invisible, that noisy argument suddenly silenced” (Collins). Just seeing Earth from outer space helps people gain knowledge, imagine what actually studying space and all the it encompasses would teach us.
