Most respected educational researchers note that the single most important determinant of success for students is the knowledge and skill of the child’s teacher. Rather than teachers simply being one factor, mounting evidence suggests the most important factor in how much children learn IS the teacher. However, researchers have also found a direct and consistent pattern in the United States - direct involvement in instruction is the least frequent activities performed at any level. Beginning with the 2015-2016 School year, this will no longer be the case in Marshall ISD. Dr. Smith and I would like to personally welcome you to the new instructional norm. You will be coaching teachers throughout the district who may be struggling in the core content for which you have been responsible. This model is very specific and very strategic. We intend to match you up, paying very particular attention to pairing you with a particular teacher who could best be served by your particular skill set. Principals are currently working to identify teachers that they feel would benefit from this content instructional model. Our content specialist will be serving alongside our instructional coaches. While our instructional coaches might be paired with 20-25 teachers, you will be responsible for a more limited number between 7-12 teachers. Remember, some teachers you will be paired with are strong, yet could benefit from having a second set of eyes, ears, or perspective which would make them even stronger. Some teachers you will be paired with are not quite as strong. These would benefit from the wide range of experience or skillset you offer that would strengthen them as a professional. Some teachers will be new to the profession. We all know how hard those first few years are and how much it would have helped to have someone with your experience and expertise to help them learn what they didn’t learn in college. Some teachers you will be paired with are really struggling, having a difficult time adjusting to the standards, expectations or even adjusting to the way in which we do things in Marshall ISD. Content here is the key. Simply stated content specialists will focus on “What We Teach”, the curriculum, the topics, the standards. This matters immensely. The “what” that is actually taught. The instructional coaches will focus on the “How We Teach”. They will focus on helping teachers implement the most essential common elements of good teaching and then help teachers get better at them with

Clement Middle School took on this challenge in hindsight of the No Child Left Behind Initiative in which closing the gap in levels of student performance was seen as the ultimate tool in combating successful academic outcomes. “Educators are always called to consider something new, something that enables students to participate completely in an evolving world dynamic” (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2013, p. 231). Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

At this point, the children even felt comfortable enough to ask me for help. Additionally, my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Jessica Diaz, is still extremely helpful and even allows me to teach the students in small-groups. By working in small-groups, I have been able to facilitate learning on an individualized level.…

The greatest determinant of learning is not socioeconomic level or school funding, but rather the instruction that takes place in the school community (Schmoker, 2006, pg. 7). In this instance, the majority of the teachers lack the commitment needed to ensure the implementation of effective instruction. The goal of further observations includes fostering conversations on what effective instruction looks like and how strategies utilized by teachers can impact learning. My democratic approach to observations would provide a lens on all practices in place at the school level. In this area, if too much structure or control exists—in terms of instruction—it can negatively affect a teacher’s motivation and autonomy, impact the quality instruction, and produce uniformity (Ubben, Hughes & Norris, 2011, pg. 204).…
