Why do some have the ability to survive the hunting of a hunter, while most others the huntsman uses as the victim do not? Why are some much better survivors than others? There are certainly many traits that Rainsford possesses that help him beat the odds, and General Zaroff. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game”, Zaroff is a general who hunts humans because he thinks that since animals cannot reason, they are too easy to defeat. Therefore, he challenges Rainsford, a normal hunter who hunts animals, to a hunting game. The rules were simple: If Rainsford can survive for three days, then Zaroff will set him free. A major characteristic that is mandatory for survival is being resilient in case something goes wrong. A perfect example of a person who possesses these traits is Eric LeGrand, a former football player for the Rutgers. During a kickoff return, Legrand broke his neck trying to make a tackle on the opposing player, therefore becoming paralyzed. Initially, the doctors had given LeGrand a 0 - 5 percent chance of full recovery. Remarkably, after spending lots of time breathing with the assistance ventilator, LeGrand regained movement in his shoulders and began his recovery - an example of pure resilience. LeGrand showed that the drive to recover and believing in yourself are the key to beating the odds, and that he would not have survived if it wasn’t for his determination to recover.
