Have you ever been in a tough situation and not known what to do or had to do something you never thought you would? In rare instances men have to do extraordinary things in order to survive, such as killing. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, Rainsford has to kill a man in order to survive and protect himself. In the story, Rainsford falls off of a yacht and swims to the island where General Zaroff lives. The General then forces Rainsford to hunt with him, but in this case the General is hunting Rainsford as if he is an animal. Therefore, because Rainsfords motivation is to win, the hunting game causes him to kill, Connell shows that sometimes people have to make tough decisions in order to survive. …show more content…
Rainsford sets a trap in which a tree would fall on the General or one of his dogs, and it succeeds. The story states, “But he was not quite quick enough; the dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell; but for his alertness, he must have been smashed beneath it,” (43). Rainsford watched from a distance while the tree fell on the General, injuring his shoulder and buying Rainsford some time. In the end of the story Rainsford is finally victorious in killing the General. On page 46 the story says, “One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On ground Rainsford…” He had never slept in a better bed Rainsford decided.” Rainsford swam instead of walking through the forest, he eventually made it to the Generals bedroom where he hid behind the curtains and was able to kill General Zaroff. In conclusion, Rainsford was successful in killing General Zaroff. In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford has a motivation in which he is forced to kill, the author, Richard Connell shows that sometimes people have to sacrifice in order to survive. Rainsford has to put his life on the line and has to kill in order for him to stay alive and protect himself.
