You’ve been stranded on an island in the tropics with a fellow hunter that feels the only quarry worth his skill is human beings and your life is in danger if you do not outwit him. He is the hunter and you are the hunted. This is The Most Dangerous Game, the story Richard Connell brought to life in the short story written in 1924. Similarly, the film produced in Hollywood in 1932 was based on the same plot. However, the two are vastly different and I dare to say that the movie does not hold true the the integrity of Connell’s original piece. The integrity of the story is affected by the many differences and similarities in the areas of initiating event, characterization, and plot between the story and movie The Most Dangerous Game.

For example, the short story plot is of Rainsford and General Zaroff going head to head using their expert hunting skills to outwit each other. On the contrary, the film exhibits a story where Rainsford and his new love are sent onto the island to be hunted and must survive one day. There are other, less consequential plot changes too. These include the hunting weapon General Zaroff used, the amount of days that Rainsford needed to stay alive to beat Zaroff in “the most dangerous game,” and finally the ending. While not stated directly in the short story, readers can assume that Rainsford snuck into Zaroff’s home and killed him to stop him from hunting ever again.
