In the story “The Most Dangerous Game”, written by Richard Connell, the setting functions and acts as a character. The setting acts as a character in the story because it adds suspense to the story. To add suspense to the story the author will often use flashbacks and foreshadowing. In this story the author uses foreshadowing to add suspense. In the beginning of the story, Whitney says that sailors have a superstition about Ship Trap Island. She says that the island has an eerie and mysterious reputation. The island having a mysterious reputation foreshadows that something bad is or will happen on the island.
