Summary of The Most Dangerous Game Sanger Rainsford was heading to “Rio” (1) to hunt jaguars. While everyone was asleep, Rainsford went out on the deck to “smoke another pipe.” (2) When his pipe was falling off the yacht, he reached out and tried to grab it but, fell off of it. Rainsford started to swim to the “Ship-Trap island” (1) because he heard a “pistol shot.” (4) When he got to the island he followed footprints and met two men, Ivan and General Zaroff. Zaroff already knew who Rainsford was, because he read Rainsford’s book. Zaroff then started talking to him about how “[he] hunts more dangerous game”, (8) and how Zaroff found a “new animal”, (10) which was a human. Rainsford was surprised and disgusted about Zaroff hunting humans. Zaroff wanted to hunt with Rainsford, but Rainsford denied him. Zaroff then told rainsford has to be hunted, “ [Zaroff’s] strength against [his].” (15) Rainsford had to survive for three days to leave the island. After Ivan gave rainsford’s clothes, Rainsford ran and “Gave [him] a trail to follow.” (17) While rainsford was being hunted, he made “The Malay Man Catcher” to catch Zaroff, but it didn't work.On the second he made another trap called “Burmese Tiger Pit,” (20) where it killed …show more content…
In the article, “Several hundred Congolese who fled the simmering conflicts in their home country” (32) the refugees left because there were too much conflicts just like “The most Dangerous Game” Zaroff left Russia “for it was imprudent for an officer.” (Connell 9) Another connection was that in the article “Newcomers are house initially in huge UN tents” (Hoekema 34) and Zaroff hid his newcomers “in the cellar.. dozen pupils down there” (Connell 13) but instead of protecting them like in the article, Zaroff hunted them. They both took in people but one was for a good reason and the other one was

The term game serves a double meaning in Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game, it refers to the animals that are hunted and to the competition between General Zaroff and the hunted castoffs. The title suggest that the most dangerous game is an activity that involves challenges that test people’s strength, stamina and overall wit, “outdoor chess,” as General Zaroff describes it. However, throughout the story the word game is used as a substitute for prey; Zaroff regards human beings as the most dangerous game for they have the ability to reason and not just follow instinct alone. The irony behind the title propose that hunting humans is the most dangerous game and that people themselves are the most dangerous game to hunt in…

Rainsford did not know what Zaroff had in mind so his last resort was self defense. Rainsford must have thought that if Zaroff did not die then he would be the one to die instead. Since Ivan got caught in the trap Zaroff might have figured his only chance of living was to kill Rainsford, Rainsford could have caught onto that and killed him so he would not have to die. Rainsford probably would have had…

He says, “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?” (Connell 6). Zaroff challenges Rainsford to a game where they try to kill each other. If Rainsford kills Zaroff or remains alive after 3 days he is allowed to leave the island. In my opinion this is an example of abnormal and violent social behavior. No one should think it would be a “game” to have two people try to kill each other for fun. Additionally, Zaroff has a training school. “We’ll visit my training school. It’s in the cellar. I have about a dozen pupils down there now.” (Connell 6). He has a cellar full of students getting them ready to fight him in his “game” and eventually kill them. I consider this to be psychopathic. There is no rational reason to do something like this. No logical person would prepare and train children or adults to kill each other in a…

As states by Zaroff "But no animal can reason, objected Rainsford. My dear fellow, said the general, there is one that can." (Conell). Through this quote one can infer that Zaroff is suggesting that he is hunting humans but at first he never comes out and says it. Zaroff is also extremely cold hearted. First of all, Zaroff is cold hearted. Zaroff says “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong.” (Conell) this quote infers that Zaroff does not care about ones life and does not mind taking one. Further more, Zaroff does not care about his friends and/or acquaintance. “You've done well, Rainsford, the voice of the general called. Your Burmese tiger pit has claimed one of my best dogs. Again you score.” (Connel) In this quote Zaroff tells Rainsford that he had killed one of his best dogs without even batting an eye. Thirdly Rainsford thinks he is soupier to most people. Zaroff states “Ivan is an incredibly strong fellow, remarked the general, but he has the misfortune to be deaf and dumb. A simple fellow, but, I'm afraid, like all his race, a bit of a savage.” This quote tells the reader that he is an arrogant and…

Zaroff and Ivan have been friends since they lived in Russia. Ivan followed Zaroff to the island to become his one and only friend and servant. Ivan is Zaroff’s only friend on the island and is the only person that Zaroff can trust. Zaroff trusts Ivan enough to even let him help on his hunts. Ivan is also Zaroff’s servant and protector and he would risk his life to protect Zaroff. Ivan pressures Zaroff’s captives into choosing the hunt instead of being whipped to death. Without Ivan Zaroff would have no one to hunt. While Zaroff is hunting Rainsford the hunt becomes tricky and he enlists Ivan to help. During the hunt Rainsford sets up a spring trap involving a knife and a tree to kill Zaroff. When the Zaroff and Ivan come across it, Ivan goes first and is stabbed and killed. Zaroff has no reaction to the death of his friend and continues on with the hunt. Later that night while Zaroff was in his home, his only thoughts were that, “two slight annoyances kept him from perfect enjoyment. One was the thought that it would be difficult to replace Ivan.” (P.13). Ivan is Zaroff’s only friend and when he dies Zaroff shows no empathy. Zaroff’s only thought was that Ivan would be hard to replace; any sane human would have been upset with the death of their friend and would not be thinking about replacing them. Zaroff treats his best friend like a commodity instead of an actual human. Zaroff…

In the short story, he lures many people of all races to his island and provides them with the utmost alluring stay at his home. Then, after he persuades them into the glamor of his lifestyle, he gives them an ultimatum: either play his “game,” or get handed off to Ivan who is known for being a vicious warrior (Connell 7). This is an example of the violation of Title 18 Code 1203, Hostage Taking according to Cornell University Law School. The code states, “... whoever, whether inside or outside the United States… detains and threatens to kill, to injure… shall be punished by imprisonment for any term of years or for life and, if the death of any person results, shall be punished by death or life imprisonment.” Zaroff’s games consist of him trying to kill his “prey,” the hostages on his island, while they try to escape his cynical wrath. Some may argue that this code cannot be implied here because General Zaroff was not an American citizen, one of the qualifications of the code, but Sanger Rainsford, the confined man, was indeed an American citizen. This is conveyed when Rainsford states, “My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City” (Connell 3). Zaroff’s ultimatum proves that he has an intent on forcing them to play his game. We know he ends up killing them in the end when he states, “To date I have not lost” (Connell 7). Zaroff also violated Murder code 1111.…

no hunting--"(30). You can tell that the general is upset that Rainsford doesn’t want to hunt but he is nice about it knowing that he will make him hunt. Zaroff overcomes Rainsford’s opinions on hunting by obeying his wishes and not fighting back, “Rainsford shook his head. "No, general," he said. "I will not hunt." The general shrugged his shoulders and delicately ate a hothouse grape. "As you wish, my friend," he said”(30). By being kind, it makes Zaroff look nicer and Rainsford rude. It makes it harder for him to say no. Zaroff thinks ahead even though he knows he will make Rainsford hunt. Lastly, after the hunt, General Zaroff wants a rematch after Rainsford survived. He is nice about the rematch offering a prize to whoever wins. “One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford." . . .He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided”(36). Even though General Zaroff’s plan didn’t work out and it fired back in the end, he is nice about the rematch and Rainsford’s win in the…

First of all, evidence from the story shows that Zaroff considers himself civilized. He considers himself civilized because he says “Oh yes, I have electricity. We try to be civilized here”(pg.50). He says this because he sees that if has something that has to do with civilization, like electricity, then he is civilized. Even though he’s in a place where there isn’t a store or something like that, he still considers himself civilized. In this case he is civilized wherever…

What he did to resolve this problem was he stocked his island with human beings because he wanted a challenge. The way Zaroff looked at it, what he was doing wasn't harsh because he gave them electricity, food, water, and a place to stay until he wanted to hunt. If they refused to hunt with him, he turned them over to Ivan to be tortured. These are reasons why I feel Zaroff is a harsh…
