The Most Dangerous Game
“The Most Dangerous Game”, written by Richard Connell in 1924. Is a story about two expert hunters who take part in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Connell uses a host of literary elements in this thrilling short story to help create and sustain an atmosphere of suspense, fear, and thrill. Some literary Richard Connell used in the Most Dangerous Game include imagery, foreshadowing, and theme.
Imagery plays a strong role in this story by helping create the eerie feeling present throughout the whole story. Right at the beginning we get an image of the waters surrounding the infamous Ship Trap Island, when our protagonist Rainsford falls in. It is described as “blood warm”, and that it is growling this gives it a feeling

It is mostly present in the beginning of the story. When Rainsford asks if they have passed Ship Trap Island Whitney answers with “I hope so this place has a bad reputation”, the island was mention before and by it coming up a second time, it suggests that something is going to take place involving the island, something bad. Also the color red is frequently used to describe things in the beginning further telling us that violence is going to take place. When Rainsford is in the blood warm water he hears more gunshots and a scream of an animal that he cannot identify. This is very odd since he has hunted nearly every animal known to man. This hints that something unusual is being hunted here, which we later find out are humans. When Rainsford and Zaroff are speaking Zaroff says “Ivan is a simple man, but, I’m afraid, like all his race, is a bit of a savage”, he then smiles showing his very evil looking and teeth and revels he too is of Ivan’s race. This tells us that Zaroff is not a man with good intentions and makes us wonder what devious plan he has in store for Rainsford. The next example of foreshadowing really revels what Zaroff does on this island of his. When Rainsford states that he thinks the cape buffalo is the most dangerous of all big game. Zaroff then replies with “No, sir you’re wrong. The cape isn’t the most dangerous big game, here on my island I hunt more dangerous game”, this doesn’t exactly tell us that he is hunting humans, but really hints to what he is hunting. Again this keeps the suspense up it keeps us wondering what this man is really up too. We later find out that he is indeed killing people for sport. We get a statement that Zaroff wants to hunt Rainsford. After the Rainsford refuses to hunt with the general he replies with a threatening statement “The choice rest entirely with you. But may I not venture to suggest that you will find my idea of

The Okefenokee Swamp is located between Southeast Georgia and Northern Florida. It is known for its large diversity of animals and vivid scenery that make the swamp very unique with its primitive nature. Two passages were written in the late 20th century that described the swamp and it most notable features. Although the two passages discuss the Okefenokee Swamp, they possess different styles through Passage One’s intention to educate the reader on the swamp, and Passage Two’s intention to inform the reader on the dangers of the swamp; all through the use of diction, imagery, and syntax. Through the use of diction, Passage One follows a word choice that is serene and scientific, while Passage Two follows a word choice that is endangering…

Whitney’s depiction of his past experiences with the island has an ominous tone. The eeriness with which Whitney felt a chill while there was no wind gives the impression that something extremely strange and abnormal is present, thereby giving the island an aura of ominous mystery. In addition to creating a mysterious aura, the absence of natural phenomena develops suspense early in the story, as it is associated with frightening scenes. Furthermore, Connell starts the story with a discussion, in which Whitey tells Rainsford about Ship-Trap Island, a place that “Even cannibals wouldn 't live in” (Connell 1). Whitney only tells Rainsford that the island is dangerous and cannot provide an…

Trying to maintain his civility, Rainsford had to play Zaroff’s game in order to survive. This conflict between man versus man was very tense. Both men wanted to deem themselves as the ultimate hunter and did whatever they could to win the hunt. Coming from two men sitting at the dinner table eating, now, to two men in the jungle trying to kill each other is very dramatic and illustrates the overwhelming conflict between man versus man in “The Most Dangerous Game.”…
