“The Mortal Immortal”is a mysterious short story that tells of an impatient young man, Winzy, that has taken an immortality elixir from his mentor, Cornelius, unknowing of what he has consumed. He then continues to live his day to day life, marrying the love of his life, Bertha, along the way. As time went on, Winzy, Bertha, and the people of the village realized that Bertha was aging while Winzy was not. A fiasco ensued and due to this Bertha and Winzy were forced to move. Bertha continued to age up to her death which Winzy then soul crushingly endured (Shelley). “The Mortal Immortal” serves as a lesson to the reader on patience based on its relatable characters, overall mood, and turn of events which make it an enlightening must read short story.
To begin with, a reason this short story could be considered enlightening is that of the relatability. In the sense that the main characters impulsiveness leads to the drinking of the immortality elixir, this seems to be a reasonable human response. According to business insider “from one third to 80% of all suicide attempts are impulsive acts” (Adwar). This shows how detrimental impulsiveness can be. Winzy experiences an impulsive decision that forever alters his life. In the story, “The Mortal Immortal”, Winzy unknowingly takes a swig of an elixir and then becomes trapped to his earthly life for all eternity (Shelley). This is an act of impulse and could be taken into account considering that he took the elixir in order to either gain the attention of or rid himself of the pain he felt without Bertha.
