The characters all failed to show strength and a voice. Majority of the people do not speak their mind when to come to the lottery they do not say if it is something they want to do it or if it is something that should be taken away. For example, Mrs. Adams said, “Some places have already quit lotteries” and Old Man Warner said, “Pack of young fools.” Since people give this kind of remarks when someone gives their opinion about this they feel the need to not say anything at all. The villages all they are amused by is the actions that happen before, during, and after the lottery. The people fear change which makes them weak when wanting to change something for the better. Shirley Jackson wrote this story without having any kind of in depth meaning, everyone wanted answers to why she wrote the story and all she said was that the story had no meaning she just wrote it for amusement. Although “The Lottery” might be confusion and it can take awhile to understand it, but at the end this story everyone can be have their one opinion about it, as well as their own understanding of what it means to the reader. I think that’s what Shirley wanted to do for the readers have their own understanding and interpretative the way they want and all around the country people will give you many versions of what they think of this story.
