In Beowulf, Beowulf fights three different monsters. The first monster he fights is Grendel, the second is Grendel’s mom, and the third is a dragon. Each fight shows an important part of Beowulf. The fight with Grendel shows his power, the fight with Grendel’s mom shows his weakness and the fight with the dragon shows his death, as well as the birth of a new hero.
The fight with Grendel shows Beowulf’s power. Grendel is a demon that has killed 30 people 12 years previous to Beowulf’s arrival and many people have attempted to kill him. Everyone that attempted to kill Grendel always wore armor and used weapons. Beowulf said that he would not use weapons. He is bragging that he is stronger than anyone else. Before he goes out to slay her, he puts on his armor and gets his sword. This is telling us that this fight will be a lot harder than the one with Grendel, as there was no need for armor and weapons during his previous fight. When Beowulf comes after her, the mother has another advantage. She is in her home territory, which she has ruled for a hundred years. As the Geat champion dives deep into the lake, the mother waits and attacks only when he nears the bottom. He is virtually helpless as she drags him to the dry, eerily lighted cave for the kill. Once on dry land, however, Beowulf is able to mount a counter-attack. Although his sword, Hrunting, loaned to him by Unferth, fails to penetrate the mother's hide, Beowulf discovers a giant magic sword in the cave and is able to kill the mother with it. The sword melts to its hilt after Beowulf uses it to decapitate the corpse of Grendel, which lies nearby. He returns to Heorot with a greater trophy, the head of the ogre, as well as the hilt of the magic sword. Beowulf didn’t need to use a weapon to defeat Grendel.
