In Beowulf, Beowulf battles three different monsters. Each monster and fight has its own symbolism and difficulty. The most significant battle is the first, against Grendel. Beowulf arrives in Hrothgar’s kingdom to help defeat the monster that has been torturing the Danish people. Beowulf has a good reputation and he comes saying that if it is God’s will he will defeat the demon. A Danish warrior named Unferth was not convinced of Beowulf and questioned his ability during dinner before the fight with Grendel, this mounts pressure on Beowulf to be successful and keep his good reputation. Grendel is a monster descendant of Cain, banished to misery with other monsters. Grendel attacked the Heorot because he could not stand the sound of happiness
