Monsters are due on Maple Street
The theme in The Monsters are due on Maple Street, is fear. The theme begins to appear in the story when the people do not know what is going on because nothing was working, that would usually work in a blackout like cars or flashlights. In the text, the two figures, who appear to be aliens, disclose the real reason for the blackout. The reason was that if you put people in the dark, anyone, for even just a little while, they will fear the cause of it. even if they know the person or thing they blame it on.This shows that even if they know the person or thing they blame it on, they still see it as a threat, and then everyone passes the blame around, until they know the reason for something they do not understand,

The scene that I have picked that I feel sound communicates the thriller theme is when Peter Lorre’s character is on the prowl for his next victim. The scene begins with a car horn, setting the location and tone of a city street. You then see the murderer looking inside a storefront when he spots the reflection of a little girl. Although these moments are silent, there is an eerie vibe because you can see the wheels in his head turning as he develops his course of action. The murderer then begins to whistle the song “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” a tune one can often hear in other movies today during moments of high tension.…

Everybody has hardships, whether it be physical or emotional. But everyone does not have the courage or strength to push through troubled times, and many people fall short. In the stories “Up the Slide” by Jack London and “Glow in the Dark” by Gary Paulsen, the main characters go through an ordeal, and manage to persevere. While Clay, the main character of “Up the Slide”, faces a physical hardship, the narrator of “Glow in the Dark” faces an emotional ordeal. The themes of the texts are similar in a way, but the mood of the story helps establish a clear, strong theme.…

Monsters have long been used to express an inner flaw or turmoil that is manifested in a particular society or an individual. We see this time and time again, from Little Red Riding Hood to the collection of Grimm’s Fairytales. Night of the Living Dead, the movie can be seen as a struggle or revolt against collectivism and consumer culture. When the Night of the Living Dead is looked at in comparison to the time it was created, a deeper meaning becomes much more transparent. NoTLD was filmed in the 60’s, a time known for its counter-cultural movements and revolutionaries.…

Thelma and Louise, a film by Carolyn Ann Khouri, trails the liberations of two working class women in the 90’s. These women plan a weekend away from the men in their lives due to the fact that Thelma’s husband is a misogynistic man who feels that a woman’s job consists only of housework and cooking. In the first scene of the movie Thelma wants to ask her husband, Darryl, for permission to go on the trip with Louise. He yells at her and she quickly changes the subject. In my opinion, this is one of the most crucial scenes in the entire film because it outlines the sexism and discrimination that these two women will face throughout the course of the movie.…

The events in the story and the characters’ behavior convey the theme because when one of the characters lost the ability to see, he was able to truly appreciate the monster’s company. According to the passage, the old man with open arms says, “Hearing him approach, the blind man welcomes him: ‘Come in my friend,’ and takes him by the arm,” (13, 14). The old man graciously greets the monster upon arrival; this shows how considerate the old man is towards the monster. Additionally the old man teaches the monster how to properly eat, drink, and how to smoke a cigar. In the poem, the monster vocalizes, “...’Drink—good,’ in his deep nutty voice and smiles maybe for the first time in his life,” (34, 35).…

Out of fear, blame is often presented to those who come off as an easy target. Taking the easy way out seems a lot simpler then risking oneself pride and status, and this way creates a multitude of problems. Not only is the blame made off of assumptions and past grudges, but oftentimes the accusations are made from a type of deeply felt resentment that boils below. Whether this blame is made based on skin color or reputation, or whether the accusation is made out of a sense of greed and want for more, the scenario is that oftentimes taking the easy way out becomes a much more complicated circumstance.…
