Monomyth structure
The monomyth structure is very successful in many stories with a hero. There are many stages in the monomyth structure, one of the stages being the Supernatural Aid. The Supernatural Aid occurs during the characters quest, a guide appears and helps them through their quest. Another stage in the monomyth structure is Crossing The Threshold. Crossing The Threshold is when the character leaves their world, and they cross into a field of adventure where the rules and limits are unknown. Initiation- The Road of Trials is another step to the monomyth structure. These are the tests a person must undergo to begin the transformation. Katniss volunteers after her sister Prim gets chosen to battle in The Hunger Games, Katniss then goes to The Capitol, at this point Katniss crosses the threshold. Katniss immediately feels out of place and different, “Why do these people speak in such a higher pitch? Why do their jaws barley open when they talk? Why do the ends of their sentences go up as if they’re asking a question,” (Collins 61)? Katniss is experiencing things that are unknown to her. In The Odyssey Odysseus experiences this monomyth step when he gets lost in the sea. Zeus changed the wind direction “Zeus, the Cloud-Gatherer, stirred the north wind against our ships… For nine days I was driven by fierce winds over the teeming sea: but on the tenth we set foot on the shores of the Lotus-eaters,” (Homer Bk IX:63-104). Odysseus crossed into the Lotus-eaters land, which he is unfamiliar with. The rules and limits are unknown when a character crosses the threshold and leaves their …show more content…
This happens in How to Train Your Dragon when Hiccup befriends Toothless. Hiccup tries a lot of experiments until he learns how to train Toothless, he then realizes Toothless can not fly, so Hiccup designs a new wing for Toothless, and then he begins to teach Toothless how to fly (How to Train Your Dragon). Hiccup went through a whole bunch of trials before he could befriend Toothless. The Road of Trials is also present in The Odyssey, Odysseus encountours lots of tests on his way back to Ithaca. Many troubles followed Odysseus and his crew, one of them being when Odysseus lost his men to the Cicones, “and six of my well-armoured comrades died from each ship,” (Homer Bk IX:1-62).
