The Monkey's Paw is a short story written by, W.W. Jacobs. The Monkey’s paw is a really good story I think that the author did good writing it, but I liked the play of it better. W.W. jacobs is an amazing writer even just short stories, but I liked the play better. The play and the short story was very similar, but there was some differences. The setting of the short story was in Herbert’s house and Herbert and his dad were playing chess, on the contrary, in the play Herbert, his mother, and his father were not playing chess they were talking to each other and Herbert was going to work. I loved the theme of both, the short story and the play. The theme was be careful what you wish for, that was the same theme for both, but there was some other themes for each one individual to. The theme for the play is listen to people with experience, like Herbert should listen to his mother because she lived longer then him and been through more things than him, so he should listen to her. The conflict of the two stories is that there son dies in the play and in the story. Indeed the story and the play has some similarities there are some differences. The stories conflict is that the dad didn’t want the son back because Herbert died in the machinery so you would be all torn up and he died 10 days ago so he would not be the same person then before he died. The conflict of the play was that Herbert didn’t listen to his mother when she said to put on a scarf. The characters were all the same except in the short story Herbert was young like 14 however in the play Herbert looked older around 30. Then all the characters except Herbert were the same in the play and in the story. The plot is the same in both the story and in the play, the plot is Mr. and Mrs. White's son dies and their wish for 200 pounds comes true but they lose their son. They would rather have there son then have the wish

Jacobs uses foreshadowing as one of his main tools in the story to show the menacing results of wishing on the monkey’s paw, not wanting the whites to experience what others have suffered. In addition, he foreshadows a climatic ending by leaving the monkey’s paw with two wishes remaining in the White’s possession.
