The Monkey's Paw Compare And Contrast Essay

The Monkey's Paw short story and play are very similar with some slight differences to the story. The Monkey’s Paw is the only story remembered that was written by W.W. Jacobs. Firstly, the characters are different in the show than they were in the book. In the story, Sergeant Major Morris presents the Whites with the Monkey’s Paw, rather than in the play where SGM Morris’s wife presents the Whites with the Monkey’s Paw because SGM Morris “died of a fever in india”, according to Mrs. Morris. SGM Morris warns the Whites and tells Mr. White to “be a sensible man and throw it into the fire.”, Morri proceeds to throw it into the flames, but Mr. White rescues it. When Morris leaves, Mr. White, following the suggestions of his son, wishes for two-hundred pounds. Afterwards, the paw twists in his hand. The next day,

Usually, if the audience that watched one of the many plays performed by others, they get the wrong information about what actually happened in the novel, like how in a play, Scrooge’s gravestone grows up to 10 feet high, begins to glow green, and has smoke coming from it. In the novel, however, the gravestone does not do anything that happened in the play, and it’s a normal gravestone. In short, the play and novel are similar in some ways, like how they are both based or loosely based on the novel, both versions have the three ghosts, and how Scrooge becomes good heart person and enjoys Christmas. William W. Jacobs displays his existentialist nature through themes of freedom, responsibility, and death. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” Jacobs demonstrates these themes progressively through his characters and their actions after a cursed talisman eradicates all limitations. Jacobs establishes through his character Mr. White that humanity must accept responsibility for their own choices, regardless of the consequences that may follow.…
