There are so many little journeys in the novel Monkey, but the ones where the Monkey gained more powers were the most interesting to me. From the beginning of the novel the Monkey is always changing; starting out as a stone on the Mountains of Flowers and Fruit. To eventually becoming Buddha at the end of the novel. Power can be described in many ways, it can be described as magical power but also power can be measured by growth or respect, the ability to not die, to become enlightened. Literary Analysis: “The Monkey’s Paw” With money being the main concern in the daily lives of society, consumerism has spread dramatically with the globalization of the economy. As a result, companies frequently come out with newer and ‘better’ versions of items with minimal changes to entice consumers to spend more money. Although many consumers do not necessarily need the new product, many are compelled to purchase it to use as a status symbol or gain attention from peers. This behavior causes mass amounts of careless waste and consumerism, while also causing greed and carelessness. Additionally, with this type of society, more people are more likely to be unaware of their own shortcomings and repeat their errors in judgment With this in mind, consumerism and greed are aspects of human nature that are ingrained in society through global markets and high purchasing power.…

The ‘Monkey Master Fable’ follows that an old man named “Ju Gong” enslaved a group of monkeys, forced them to give him a portion of their collections of fruit, and flogged them if they did not submit to his demands. After the monkeys became “enlightened” as a result of youthful influence, they rebelled against the Monkey Master and abandoned him (after destroying his properly and stealing stored fruit), which consequently lead to his death via starvation. It is clear that the Monkey Master is the victim in the case of this fable, but in order to identify why the Monkey Master is the victim, we must define the monkeys as the victimizer.
