The Moment Before
Steven Sotloff was an Israeli born freelance writer and reporter who often traveled to his homeland in the Middle East. In the photo there are two people, the prisoner Sotloff and the executioner. There is a desert background and an Arabic caption. This image depicts Sotloff and the ISIS member who is about to carry out the execution of Sotloff the reasons this photo was released because ISIS uses it to: frighten Americans by showing the ISIS member as powerful, converting others to Islam because of this power and to depict the non-believer, American as weaker. Throughout history militant groups have attempted to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. In the photo the executioner is dressed from head to toe in all black, including his face, only his eyes are slightly visible. Have you ever stopped caring so much that whatever happens, happens? I remember the time I had gotten in trouble by my mom because I had walked home from school. It was a gloomy day from it being so cloudy and cold. I was talked into walking home during school by friends whom, at the time didn't care about school as much as I did, cared nothing of school. My analyzation of Richard Notkin’s piece, All Nations Have Their Moment of Foolishness was altered once I read his artist statement. The way my analysis changed was the reasons behind Jesus’ feet, George Bush, and the hooded prisoner. Further, the hooded prisoner in Abu Ghraib Prison is an image of war and destruction according to Notkin’s artist statement . When originally saw the man my first thought was that he was part of the KKK because of the hood he is seen wearing but upon receiving more information about the tile it came to be that he was actually a tortured man being watched/tortured?…

This specific piece is referring to the Eric Garner incident and how he was choked to death by a police officer. Garner had been flailing his arms around in a “menacing” way, causing one of the police officers to put him in a choke hold which later resulted in his death.…

Botero created this painting with intent to begin a “conversation, based off of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. ” The Abu Ghraib prison was led and conducted by the United States Army. Botero found the scandal to be ironic since the United States is supposed to be country that symbolizes freedom and justice yet, they were responsible for the actions that went on in the prison. In an interview conducted with Botero, he states, "The United States presents itself as a defender of human rights and of course as an artist I was very shocked with this and angry”(Baker). The modernistic motion picture The Hunger Games recounts Katniss Everdeen and the citizens of Panem’s 12th District as they continue their rebellion against the Capitol and the “Games”, which provide a source of enjoyment for those residing in the elite districts of Panem. While known as an ever-popular, chart-topping movie to Americans, The Hunger Games provides as a strong illustration of a society that shows close resemblance to the phantasm of utopia and dystopia. By definition, a utopia is “an imaginary place in which the government, laws, and social conditions are perfect” (Merriam-Webster). In contrast, a dystopia is essentially the opposite of a utopia, and is defined as “an imaginary place where people are unhappy and usually afraid…
