He conveys the story that when he was in the third grade, he thought that he was gay. He goes through the stereotypes of people who are gay: he keeps his room straight, he can draw, and his uncle is gay. Later in the song he tells of how his mother told him that "Ben you 've loved girls since before pre-k.” (Macklemore, Same Love) Throughout the song, Ben demonstrates that being gay is okay. There is nothing wrong with people who are gay, they are who they are and show a lot of bravery. He even goes as far as calling out American citizens stating “America the brave still fears what we do not know”, (Macklemore, Same Love) and goes on to say that Americans hide their fears behind the fear itself. “Man, that 's gay” gets dropped on the daily. We become so numb to what we 're saying. A culture founded from oppression, yet we don 't have acceptance for 'em. (Macklmore) His song reveals him as a seven year old, with the mindset similar to everybody else. “I wanted to be cool, and I wanted to fit in. I wanted what he had”; (Macklmore) but when reality struck in, it did not matter about the shoes he wore or the cloths on his back. “We are what we wear, we wear what we are. But see, I look inside that mirror and think Phil Knight tricked us all. Will I stand for change, or will I stay in my box? These Nike’s help me define me, but I’m trying to take mine, off.” (Macklmore) The message of the whole song is to be real. Do not be another person because their personality is already taken. Shoes, clothes, brands, and money do not define a person, it’s the person itself. “It started out, with what I wear to school. That first day, like these are what make you cool. And this pair, this would be my parachute. So much more than just a pair of shoes, Nah, this is what I am, what I wore, this is the source of my youth. This dream that they sold to you, for a hundred dollars and some change. Consumption is in the veins, and now I see it 's just another pair of shoes.”
