Inequality of Women Worldwide Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.” In many places around, men are entitled to rights and opportunities that society often denies women; this inequality occurs for women in education, jobs, the community, and roles in their family. Society discourages women from receiving an education while society promotes males to pursue an education. In many continents, such as Africa and Asia, women strive for the ability to learn, develop, and obtain the same opportunities as men despite the consequences of beatings, sexual abuse and other troubling events that lie ahead.…

Merriam-Webster defines genocide as “the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group.” However, Andrea Smith may argue that this definition can be expanded to include the destruction of a gender. According to Smith, sexual violence has been used as a mechanism to destroy native communities. From this view, Smith uses theoretical and factual examples to support her argument of how native women are bodily and metaphorically under attack.…

Institutional violence is certainly more than just violence against women; however, violence against women is a huge part of institutionalized violence. In general we can define institutional violence as violence that comes out of the very institutions that underlie our modern society (can it be modern at all with institutional violence?) and will be most evident in interactions between the rich and poor. Harriet Hyman Alonso identifies “... the connection made between institutionalized violence and violence against women...” (Alonso 8) as a central theme of feminist peace movements. Let’s explore some ways in which violence against women is a key element of how institutional violence…
