The individuals responsible for these types of organ sales take advantage of both the seller and the recipient. Victims on either end of these arrangements are often promised large sums of money they never receive, or are offered organs that are being sold at exuberant amounts of money. According to a human rights group called Organ Watch, “an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 kidneys are illegally sold globally each year”. A resolution has been established and adopted by the World Health Assembly that promotes “taking measures to protect the poorest and vulnerable groups from ‘transplant tourism’ and the sale of tissues and organs”. Even with awareness being at an all-time high of this issue, the magnitude of the profit making worldwide organ trade is still evident. (Shimazono, 2007). The final result of these chain of events leads to organ donors and recipients putting their trust in the wrong people. It has been reported numerous times in media outlets such as newspaper articles that" the deaths of patients who went abroad for overseas commercial transplants; the abuse, fraud and coercion of paid kidney donors exist and are also frequently reported"(Shimazono, 2007). As a result of medical mistrust in the organ donation community, this mistrust leaves many potential donors, as well as family members of potential donors, unwilling to make the crucial obligation of organ donation. The unwillingness of organ donation in turn leads to the low supply of organs available. When the number of organ donations are low, individuals in need of an organ transplant seek other means of acquiring the lifesaving organs needed in order to survive.
