Ennio Morricone’s film score for The Mission, made the movie possible. The music tied the characters, dialogue, and perspectives together. If the music in this movie were removed it would not be a success. Roland Joffe and Ennio Morricone came together and made it so that the music and images were equivalent. The score adds so much depth and emotion to the film. For instance, the guitar melody that accompanies the confession scene definitely helps to put us in Rodrigo’s position. The music is intimate with the soft guitar strumming, but it is also sad and helpless. Carlotta is Rodrigo’s wife and she is telling him that she loves another man.
