The Misfits

In the book The Misfits, written by James Howe, a group of friends struggle to get through their 7th grade year with obstacles like name calling, stereotypes, and injustice. They call themselves the group of 5,however, there’s really 4 members. They are Abby, Bobby, Skeezie, and Joe. Three members of the groups problems will be revealed. Skeezie, Bobby, and Joe will have their stories told and why they are a part of the “misfits”,the people that will never give up, the people that will never be put down.

Skeezie is an outcast because of his “Elvis/biker gang dude” vibe that he gives many people. If you don’t judge this book by it’s cover and “read the book” a little then you’ll get to know that Skeezie is a real softie, and just dresses this way because of the emotional impact of his father leaving his mom when he was young. His father used to wear the kind of clothes Skeezie does, so when his dad all of the sudden left on his Harley and didn’t come back, he found a great deal of comfort in wearing his father’s clothes. His sisters still haven’t gotten over it. Next, Bobby gets bullied for being fat. Of course, Bobby has his reasons. When he was in elementary school, his mom got very sick and died of cancer. Bobby’s dad was devastated and gave up all of his dreams. Bobby

Skeezie, Bobby, and Joe are great characters to show this and you really make a connection to them after you see the dumb reasons why they’re bullied and how they overcame it to become successful people. This is how you should feel about all the outcasts, the

In her novel The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton explores the theme that stereotypes are unfair and that therefore, one cannot judge an entire group of people based on these prejudices. A person is more than just a product of their community or circumstances, which is seen to be true in the characters of Johnny and Ponyboy. The Outsiders has two types of people, there are Greasers and Socs. The Greasers were the middle class unlike the soc who are more rich and Greasers are more wilder.…

This was one of the best short stories I have ever read. A good man is hard to find required me to think critically and to ask questions. This short story was about a family who decided to take a family vacation. Many families take vacations to get along with one another and to create family memories. This family was hoping to accomplish this very goal.…

The Breakfast Club (Part Two: Theories) Social Identity Theory: “Tajfel (1979) proposed that the groups (e.g. social class, family, football team etc.) which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self-esteem. Groups give us a sense of social identity: a sense of belonging to the social world.” (McLeod 2008) In this movie there are five adolescents trying to find themselves and fit in within the groups they currently belong or have migrated into; the exception of one, Allison who acts out in mannerism that isolates her which is easier than trying to fit it. Andy and Claire belong to the ‘cool/popular kids’ the jocks, the cheerleaders the prom queens.…

The characterization of the Misfit maybe simple, but it is actually a somewhat difficult thing to do. In lame mans terms, he does not fit in a one size fits all explanation of what he is. For one, he is a misfit and an outsider, never quite fitting in our cookie cutter society. His case is quite peculiar in the fact that he can not be simply written off as crazy. It would be simple to put a label on him and be done with it, but why not delve deeper into this and give a more precise characterization of the Misfit.…

John Hughes wrote and directed the cult-like movie which is set in the 1980s called the Breakfast Club. The movie is about high school students that all do something wrong during school and end up in a day-long Saturday detention with an extremely strict principal that has them work towards a single goal. Throughout the movie the interaction among the different characters is very interesting and eye opening about how people can learn to get along and to communicate, The diversity of the group, variations between and among people, is easy to recognize as it consists of Claire who is the popular school princess, Andrew the big school jock, John Bender the bad boy, Brian the brainiac, and Allison the school outcast and basket case. The group seems to be in culture shock, the psychological discomfort of adjusting to a new cultural situation, at the start of the day since the five students are pretty much strangers to each other.…

Society attacks both the Misfit in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, by Flannery O’Connor, and Ysrael, in Junot Díaz’s short story, “Ysrael”. Both of the characters have been targeted all their lives and cast off from society. The Misfit, a murderer, has escaped from prison and is being tracked down by officials, and Ysrael, a boy who hides from everyone, is bullied because of his deformed face. While the Misfit carries out violence upon others, Ysrael receives extreme hatred from the children in his community. Only one character is a criminal, but both are victims of society.…

Emile Durkheim’s functionalist theory can be applied to the movie The Ron Clark Story. Functionalism is a theoretical framework in which society is viewed as composed of various parts, each with a function that, when fulfilled, contributes to society’s equilibrium. This movie is based on a true story about a teacher who moved from teaching in North Carolina to Harlem, New York to teach at one of its schools. He asked to teach the most disruptive class, which had been labeled as hopeless and impossible to control. Mr. Clark had a difficult time with the class for most of the movie, but through determination and understanding, he eventually turned the worst class in the school into a well-behaved class who scored outstandingly high on their…
