The Miraculous Journey Of Edward Tulane

I’ve read hundreds of novels, plays, and vignettes in my life, yet the story that taught me the most about being human was one about a porcelain rabbit. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo tells the story of a china doll named Edward, who begins the story as an arrogant and vain doll loved by one young girl. Through a series of accidents, Edward is moved from family to family, and his little heart begins to feel the love he has always received. I believe The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is a book all students in the Honors Program should read because of its multi-faceted, accessible story, and its uncanny ability to stick with the reader long after the pages are closed. Reading this book as a child, I was enraptured

The readings in this class were quite interesting and made me view different situations from someone else’s perspective. With all the books and stories we were responsible for this class, I connected to three wonderful stories for two particular reasons. As a young doctor, and doctor in general, there will be times when you develop a strong attachment towards a patient that may affect you mentally or a patient comes in with symptoms that are not recognizable. When I become a doctor, I always worried how I would react under pressure and whether I would become too emotionally attached to my patient; that is why I connected to The Scalpel and the Silver Bear, From the Heart and My Own Country, short stories from the book A Life in Medicine. These…

Molly Bang Paper When thinking of this assignment, I immediately knew which book I was going to choose. I felt that choosing a favorite book from my childhood could be a fun way to see the differences in how I viewed it then, and how I might view it today. As a child, I was in love with Mercer Mayer’s “Little Critter” books (and still am today). I decided not to go searching for an easy or popular book, rather I wanted to take one I know and love and see if/how Molly Bang’s principles were applied.…

I will be examining "Antichrist Barbie" and "Sensational Barbie" by Denise Duhamel. These poems show how easily children are persuaded by what they see and have to play with. Susie Orbach's "Losing Bodies" shares themes that are in both of the poems. Duhamel's poems demonstrate dystopian themes and the persuasion that toys have on children. Susie Orbach's "Losing Bodies" and Duhamel's "Antichrist Barbie" both show how people can be persuaded to think a certain way just by their surroundings.…

Sandra Cisneros’s short story, “Barbie-Q”, describes the hardships endured by a young girl, never identified by name, and the less-fortunate life she and her family lead. The child discloses the rarity of new toys, but purchases damaged Barbie dolls while on a trip to the flea market. The narrator acknowledges the flaws of the Barbies, but counters the stereotypical “perfect” woman standards by implying her gratefulness of possessing any dolls at all. Through this struggle, the girl learns to cope with her burdened lifestyle while also encountering gender roles and values. Cisneros wrote this story in relation to her own childhood, motivated by the social standards of gender roles and body image in relation to the Barbie doll.…

Many stories throughout literary history resonate with their readers. Some enough to be deemed literary classics. Three stories which resonate with readers from all ages are “Boys” by Rick Moody, “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and “Lust” by Susan Minot. All three stories tell of the coming of age experiences that men and woman have, but do not share the same tone. Two in particular, “Girl” and “Lust” are told from the perspective of characters themselves, and “Boys” is told from the perspective of an individual observing the main characters.…

In these two chapters, the problem of Tom Robinson begins to rise throughout the story, and the transition that the children in Maycomb experience to change from children into adults. Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mr. Ewell’s daughter, but this case is controlled by Scout’s father, who is protecting Tom Robinson from the wrong judgments of the court. This case makes Atticus’s children wonder what rape is because it has been mentioned a lot in the story since this case started. Atticus, who is known as a smart and intelligent man, responds to Scout in an adult way where he uses big words in a mature way that can be understandable to Scout. Atticus replies to Scout’s question about rape, “He sighed, and said rape was carnal knowledge of a…

In his Personal Narrative, Edwards does talk about how sinful he was throughout his life but he makes particular recollection of his youth. "It is affecting to me to think, how ignorant I was, when I was a young Christian, of the bottomless, infinite depths of wickedness, pride, hypocrisy and deceit left in my heart' (Edwards 188). It would seem Edwards vacillates a one point, when he states;” Though it seems to me, that in some respects I was a far better Christian, for two or three years after my first conversion, than I am now; and lived in a more constant delight and pleasure: yet of late years, I have had a more full and constant sense of the absolute sovereignty of God, and a delight in that sovereignty; and have had more of a sense of…
