Fatima The miracle of Fatima began in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. The Angel of Portugal appeared to them three times. The miracle happened to three little children, Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. They were taking their family’s flock of sheep to a pasture to graze. It started to drizzle and they went to a olive grove for shelter. They stayed there the rest of the day, and they ate lunch and said the rosary. Then on the horizon they saw a white, transparent figure come toward them. They were astonished. The Angel asked them to pray with him three times. He asked them to pray this way, and then he disappeared. He gave them the chalice and host, and he disappeared for the final time. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the children six times. The first time she appeared to them, May 13, 1917, they were at a pasture with their sheeps. The children had eaten their lunch and now they were praying the rosary. Then they saw something that looked like lightning in the sky. They tried to head head home, but then they went toward the apparition of a woman. The woman told them to come the exact same spot on the thirteenth of every month for six months. She also asked them to pray the rosary everyday for the war. Lucia and Jacinta heard what the Blessed Mother had said, but Francisco could not hear her. The last time Mary appeared to them was on October 13, 1917. That day, it was pouring down rain. There were 70,000 or more spectators with the children that day. When Mary appeared, it stopped raining. She asked for a chapel to be built in her honor, and for them to keep praying the rosary. She said that the war would end soon. Then the sun burst through the sky and danced around for all the people to see. This is known as the miracle of the sun.
