MIPS-R Thinking Styles Essay

The MIPS-R contains 180 true and false items used to assess normally functioning adults’ personality. The assessment can be administered and scored either through paper-and-pencil or computer formats. The MIPS-R is measures 24 scales grouped into 12 contrasting pairs, which are organized into three main categories: motivating, thinking, and behaving. The motivating styles include: pleasure-enhancing, pain-avoiding, actively modifying, passively accommodating, self-indulging, and other-nurturing. The thinking styles are the following: externally focused, internally focused, realistic/sensing, imaginative/intuiting, thought-guided, feeling-guided, conservation-seeking, and innovative seeking. Finally, the behaving styles are: asocial/withdrawing, gregarious/outgoing, anxious/hesitating, confident/asserting, unconventional/dissenting, dutiful/conforming, submissive/yielding, dominant/controlling, dissatisfied/complaining, and cooperative/agreeing. In this category, I scored higher on the Internally Focused scale under the first contrasting pair, with a 59. Individuals in who exhibit this trait are immersed deeply in the complexities of their own feelings and thoughts. However, this trait is not very strong for me given that it is 10 points away from the 50th percentile of those who also possess this trait. Significant in this category are the scores for Imaginative/Intuiting and Feeling-Guided, having scored well above the Median on both, with a 92 and 97 respectively. Individuals scoring high on the Imaginative/Intuiting scale prefer the symbolic and unknown to the concrete and observable.
