The Minority Report: St. Augustine

Augustine, also better known as St. Augustine or even Aurelius Augustinus, was born in North Africa around 354, in the town of Tagaste. He was a fourth century philosopher, with Christian doctrine based on Neoplatonism, a theologian and a bishop. Raised by his Christian mother, he initially took a mild interest towards Christ, but surprisingly more towards the “attractions of sex, fame and pride in his own cleverness.” However, the fact that he was raised as Christian immensely affected him when he was young, and later on his adult life too. Few years later, he became a student at Carthage and with his academic curiosity, he learned Greek. Later, he left Africa and went to Rome. For the longest of times, he was intrigued by Manicheeism, a religion …show more content…
This lead me to come to the realization that Dick and Augustine held complete opposite beliefs, where one believed that predetermined events were unescapable and a necessity, the other was certain that choice was always present. In the story, Dick makes it very clear that he believes that the fate seen by precogs is impossible to escape, because Anderton’s opinion regarding his system is that his system is credited and accurate, because when Ed states, “Then, the minority report is incorrect?”, Anderton is quick to reply, “No, it’s absolutely …show more content…
In my opinion, Dick was basically Evodius, because he was a firm believer that if God foreknew everything and it was already predicted then there was no way around it, and it would have to happen, the character of Ed was the perfect example of this. During the very beginning when Anderton and Ed are getting acquainted with each other, and Anderton is giving him a summary on Precrime, Anderton says, “We’re taking in individuals who have broken no law” Ed very quickly and confidently answers, “But they surely will.” This dialogue represents the fact that people believed in the precogs’ predictions, that they would not dare question it. I believe this because Dick allowed Anderton to have many choices from the three different reports from Donna, Jerry and Mike. I believe that Augustine would comment on the fact that Jerry “prophesied” that Anderton finds about the cards and escapes from the city. This is one of the choices he could have made, but he decided not to. This is one of the choices on the Garden of Forking Paths, which would involve Anderton not killing Kaplan, so basically allowing him to prove “divine foreknowledge” wrong, and hence making a point that, foreknowledge does not predict everything and make the choices for human beings. However, Dick did not want it to seem that way in his story so he made

In desperation for somebody to care for him, Dick Hickock became Perry’s new interest, where he projected his feelings towards Willie-Jay onto Dick. If Perry wasn’t abused in his childhood, and clinging onto any sort of love that could be discovered, he wouldn’t have developed these unhealthy dependencies on others. It is especially unfortunate that Perry came to Dick, as Dick is the one who developed the plan to kill the…

He is very manipulated over and to Perry and leads us to believe he got Perry to kill the entire family. Dick is more on the nature side of things because he was raised in a good stable family. This shows that Dick was naturally psychotic and demented he was raised right but turned to evil because it was just simply in his nature. He was very demented in the fact that he used Perrys weakness of liking him to his advantage but also wanted to rape one of the girls he killed. Which brings us to the difference between nature vs nurture and what effects what in who.…

The city of New York and the well known locations within the city play an important role in the story of Dick’s rise from a simple bootblack to a young man of respectability. From Central Park to the garment district to the New York City ferries, the city itself becomes a character. Dick may not have come to New York City with the express idea to gain wealth or to fulfill a long held dream, but once there, he dreams of respectability and takes the steps necessary to see his dream become a reality. Alger confirms this in his narrative, “The new vision of respectability which now floated before Dick’s mind, owing to his recent acquaintance with Frank…” (61) Dick, Richard Hunter, was starting to dream of a better life like most, who find themselves drawn to the city of New…

Although it is obvious that the two performed a crime at the Clutter home, Dick continues to lie. It is explained that “Hickock himself, he says he wouldn’t hurt the fleas on a dog”, which is Dick continuing to lie to the detectives even though they are at the end of their journey. Although the two have been caught, Dick persists and continues to not tell the truth to the investigators. It is stated in The Relationship between Psychopathic Personality Traits and Lying that “individuals with higher levels of Antagonism and/or Disinhibition lie more frequently and to more people than other individuals”(Dobrow), which backs up the fact that Dick is more of a psychopath due to his hostile actions. With the factual evidence that hostile people develop a tendency to lie often, the readers can reasonably assume that Dick is a malicious liar.…

It is impossible to write a book about the self without bias; each statement is crafted to appear a certain way. Consequently, readers must evaluate if statements made about the self are true or simply crafted through rhetorical devices. In one of the first books written of the self, Saint Augustine, later the Bishop of Hippo, writes of his conversion to Catholicism using a blend of rhetoric and scripture to persuade readers to evaluate their own selves. In his book, Confessions, Saint Augustine utilizes humility, contrast between the past and the present, and parallels from earlier passages and the Bible in order to create a persuasive stylized performance of his conversion to Catholicism. Humility plays a crucial role in Confessions and…

Shortly after, nearby observers discuss the hanging of Dick. One observer believes that Dick “[didn’t] feel nothing,” but his companion questions this; he “could hear him gasping for breath” (392). By including the observation of Dick “gasping for breath” before he finally died, Capote suggests that Dick suffers before his death. In addition, Capote challenges the idea that executions are quick and painless by implying that Dick could have suffered for the aforementioned amount of time – twenty minutes – before dying. Executions are not a clean, merciful death, but instead, they are ruthless and inhumane.…

Dick’s shallow and flat identity are portrayed once more as Capote writes, “‘Deal me out baby, [...] I’m a normal,”(29). By claiming Dick’s character is “normal”, the reader can already notice the major flaw in this statement. In fact, from this reaction, the reader can detect the complete opposite theory that Dick is mentally ill or unstable in some way. Dick blatantly ignores Perry’s questioning and disregards plain facts of their current situation - especially that Dick introduced the idea to Perry in the first…

The intentions come mainly from Dick who is eager to “leave no witnesses” (37). The motive of the crime seems to be a robbery because Dick is constantly talking about “a big score” (14). Capote makes repeated references to the murders before they happen, including the planning of the crime. It also contains eyewitness accounts of the discovery of the bodies but the murder itself is not yet detailed. The action and suspense builds up to the moment when Dick and Perry pull up to the Clutter home, then slips past the crime to the next morning.…
