The Caton School is located in the Flatbush, Ditmas Park area in western Flatbush. The Caton School P.S 249 is a school in Brooklyn, New York, its population according to New York City Department of Education. With a gross enrollment of 894 students in the school year of 2015 to 2016, P.S 249, serves grades pre-kindergarten to fifth grade including special education classes. The student demographics consist of 6% Asian, 40% black, 49% Hispanic, and 4% percent white students. Thus, we may conclude that the majority of the population is of a minority background.
I observed three different classrooms during my time at the Caton school; 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. This school had scheduled tasks at the beginning of the day from 9:45 to 10:30 throughout the school called genius hour. During this time, there was an assistive teacher in each of the classrooms and each of these teachers had a yellow note pad that kept tract of the child behavior and what they modeled for the time period along. This was considered be the time where children read and discuss the books they were reading. In the third-grade class I attended there was assistant teachers and resource teacher wo worked with students individually and children had to complete packets that were assigned to them, I believe this session was called RTI (response to intervention).
