Hooper severely from the people of the church and even causes him to lose his marriage, the veil shows the type of man that Mr. Hooper is. The fact that he is willing to wear the black veil, which is a controversial and ostracizing decision, he is diligent to his word and wears the veil for the entirety of his life. Reverend Hooper stays true to the promise he made, which is a very respectable action, especially when he was being reprimanded for doing so. People look for a leader in a pastor and Mr. Hooper is exactly who someone should want to find and aspire to be like. If he can remain true to such a difficult promise as wearing the veil to pay for his sin, then one would expect him to honor even simpler promises. The people of Milford feel as though Reverend Hooper can see into their conscious because of his veil and that he knows their secrets and sins; perhaps this ability for a pastor is not entirely bad and if Mr. Hooper can use it appropriately, this understanding he will have of the townspeople will strengthen their relationship with him and God. Mr. Hooper might wear the veil because he is trying to protect the people of his church from the sin he has committed. If they cannot see his face and expressions then his sin will not scar them and he can hide behind his guilt. It is understandable to why people would fear the veil because it proves that Reverend Hooper is comfortable with his sin, which is something people try extremely hard to conceal. As a leader who leads by example, people will be more likely to trust their religion if they can use Mr. Hooper as a test. Reverend Hooper shows the ideal relationship that people should have with God and themselves and puts his secrets in the
