The Minister's Black Veil Analysis

Many people have secrets and have their own personal thoughts that they keep to themselves. We never truly know people to the fullest and many people do not know you individually. We all hope to achieve the same goals and still want to be connected as one. Rob Owen states, “The human aspiration that unites all people” (Owen). We are connected by our secrets, ones that people do not know, but because of this, we are united. There are three important messages from The Minister’s Black Veil, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The first message in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story, The Minister’s Black Veil, is that all people have secrets. We never truly know or are known by others. In The Minister’s Black Veil, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he states, “That mysterious emblem was never once withdrawn” (274). He must have had secrets or something he wanted to hide from others. You think you know someone, but you do not because everyone has secrets. And obviously, everyone needs their privacy and have their own rights. The term “veils” is used to show that we cover up our identity and faces to the world. In The Minister’s Black Veil, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he states, “That, and the mystery concealed behind it, supplied a topic for discussion between acquaintances…” (278). The minister was using his veil to cover his face. Like a veil covers a brides face at her wedding. Alan Cowell states, “Full-face veil is a "mark of separation" that "makes other people from outside the community feel uncomfortable."” (Cowell). Many times some individuals close out others when they try to be welcoming and this could possibly make them uncomfortable and make them feel unappreciated.
