The Minimum Legal Drinking Age

The drinking age has become one of the most debated issues in the United States amongst adults and teenagers.900 lives are saved yearly by keeping the drinking age at 21 due to a decreased number of inexperienced and intoxicated drivers says Eric Oberman in the article “Keeping The Drinking Age At 21 Saves Hundreds of Lives”. Underage drinking can cause damaging effects later on in life. 5,000 people under the age of 21 die each year to alcohol related events such as, car crashes, homicide, suicide, and alcohol poisoning says Camille Paglia in the article “The Drinking Age Is Past Its Prime”. There are not any pros to lowering the drinking age to eighteen, but there are several cons. Instead of encouraging or condoning underage drinking, the legal drinking age should remain twenty one as a result more lives will be saved from the negative effects that come along from consuming alcohol.
When you turn 18 years old here in the United States you become a legal adult. Why if you become a legal adult at 18 you cannot make the decision to consume alcohol? When you turn 18 you gain several rights such as voting, smoking cigarettes, serve on a jury in a court, get married, sign legal documents for yourself, be prosecuted as an adult, and even join the military. Some of these rights you gain can be as life threatening or harmful as alcohol is to the human body. The age of 18 is when you receive the rights and responsibilities of adulthood. Many…
