The minimum legal drinking age or MLDA should stay 21 because, alcohol can cause brain damage, a younger drinking age results in an increase in alcoholism, and most car accidents are alcohol related. Many people believe that when someone is of age to join the army or get married that they should also be able to purchase alcohol. Many people may not realize that this is one of the oldest arguments in the united states. The 18th amendment banned the buying, selling, transporting, and drinking of intoxicating substances. This increased crime and led to more illegal activities. Later the 21st amendment was passed repealing the 18th amendment. After the 21st amendment was in act the MLDA was 21, the controversy started when 18 was declared the legal voting age. At that time the MLDA could be decided by the state. Later the government threatened to take away funding from highways if the MLDA was not 21. There is no doubt that alcohol is dangerous. Many teens just think it is a fun thing to do on the weekends. “Exposing the brain to alcohol during this period may interrupt key processes of brain development, possibly leading to mild cognitive impairment as well as further to escalation of drinking.” (Underage drinking: A major public health challenge) So the question is why would parents let their children become such heavy drinkers at such a young age if they knew it was bad for them?
