The Military Profession

Have you ever been asked, “What do you do in the Army?” Well, I have and then it takes me awhile to put it into words for civilians to understand. Some civilians think that Soldiers are only trained to shoot weapons and defend our nation, but it is so much more than that. We are a profession that has expertise, trust, values, and services to defend the Constitution and the rights and interests of the American people. The Army, like a business, has leaders at the top who run the business and the doers, who perform the work. The Human Resources Sergeant works in the personnel section. Our vital role within the Army as Human Resources Sergeants has to ensure that we are available to assist the Commander with keeping them updated on …show more content…
The first area of balance is struggling with the four fields of expertise and its current and potential operating environment. The four fields of expertise are: Military-Technical, Human Development, Moral-Ethical, and Political-Cultural Expertise. According to An Army White Paper: The Profession of Arms (U.S. Army, 2010), “This includes motivating individuals and groups, their psychological and physiological attributes, culture and climate, and larger management systems and processes that must be synchronized to create each of the four fields of expertise.” If the Army is out of balance, they do not have the right capabilities to employ when and where the nation might need them.
According to An Army White Paper: The Profession of Arms (U.S. Army, 2010), “The second area of balance is the relationship between the Army’s culture and climate and its institutional practices.” How well these are aligned will affect how the strategic leaders manage the institutional systems of the Army. The Strategic leaders’ actions will show to the Soldiers and junior leaders if they see themselves as professionals serving a calling or as time-servers filling a government
