The Air Force is the newest branch of the armed forces. With a name like the Air Force it is automatically assumed that everyone flies or at least works with airplanes. In actuality less than one percent flies. There are many support functions such as cook, payroll, air traffic controller, and many more jobs. First, there is a minimum score on a placement test called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) which holds true for any branch, so qualified candidates are only accepted. With a qualifying score, one could be anything he wanted to be if the positions are open. In the Army one could be a medic, military police, dental assistant, or even a pilot with the appropriate education and training levels. The Army is a soldier first, job second type of branch, so yes, technically everyone is infantry, but most do not carry guns everyday unless it is required. The stereotype that army personnel are any less than a marine is completely false. The Army has some of the most elite Special Forces units across all the military branches to include infantry and aviation units. Sure the Navy has a great deal of ships, so if somebody loves ships this is the branch. Not all Navy personnel live on a ship all the time or even at all. The Navy has many bases or ports all over the world. Many personnel live on land full time or even on another branch installation as support units. Navy again, like the other branches, has lots of opportunities outside of being just on a ship. With the right aptitude score and education, the Navy does have a lot of aviation, so a pilot or navigator is possible. Like the other branches the Navy has support functions such as air traffic control, medic, and radar technician and lots more. The Navy calls them themselves “seamen” which is actually a rank, but in general they call themselves a seaman which sounds exactly the same as semen. This leads to immature joking and inappropriate jokes are made. Homosexuality is identified most with the Navy due to close quarters on ships and their flashy uniforms. Recently the armed forces removed the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy and approved open homosexuality. In general homosexuality is still out of the usual in the military and there is no proof of higher rates of homosexuality in the Navy.
