Born in Mingora, Pakistan, which is located in the country’s Swat Valley Malala Yousafzai, whose name means "grief stricken,” witness her town being destroyed by an Islamic fundamentalist group. Yousafzai’s hometown was a popular destination in the summer for its festivities in her early childhood till the Taliban showed interest in the town.
The Taliban is an Islamic militant fundamentalist group that enforced Sharia law. They also denied education to females and forced strict rules of behavior. Militants destroyed and blazed schools in Swat valley from 2007 to 2009 and very soon took over the town.
Yousafzai’s father, Zaiauddin Yousafazai founded a school for girls in which she attended. The school was kept open even though there was an order given by the Taliban to close all female schools. She was afraid for her father’s life since he was also an anti-Taliban activist and thought the Taliban will not harm a child so she continued. When she was 15 years old on October 9, 2012, Yousafazai was in the school van heading home when a gunman boarded the van and demanded who Malala was. The gunman wounded her by shooting at point blank in her head and shoulder as well as shooting at two other girls in the van. Yousafzai was in critical condition and was flown to Peshawar where she was stabilized. Then flown to Birmingham, England to receive further treatment. Malala’s assignation attempt sparked a massive support for her and continued all throughout her recovery.
Actress Angelina Jolie helped create the Malala Fund to help education for girls. Her first book was published in October of 2013, titled I AM Malala. Being the youngest person Yousafzai receives the Nobel Peace Prize at age 17. Now Malala devotes her time in supporting the rights for girls around the world to receive an
