I am particularly interested in pursuing a research career in neuroscience, but I am deeply drawn in undertaking the Midlands Integrative Bioscience Training Partnerships program at the University of Leicester due to its emphasise on integrating different concepts and methods from other disciples via quantitative and experimental approach.
Since my first encounter with science and knowledge, as a young child, I cultivated and spent my teenage years educating and broadening my intellect on different fields from Elizabethan literature to astronomy, even building my own small home-made telescope! The truth is, the moment I encountered knowledge, experimentation and creation I felt that everything in this world can be …show more content…
Studying this course at the University of Leicester has enabled me to further reinforce my ability to analysis and interpret research and findings in a new critical manner which is an important component for a researcher in any field. Additionally, this has shed light on the importance of numbers and statistical analysis in research and science. Moreover, learning about these key components has made me question research articles from different perspectives and as a result facilitating my critical analysis and has made me independent knowledgeable person that can stand their ground. I believe that my desire for knowledge and research cannot be accomplished without linking and integrating different branches of knowledge and disciple to explain reason, behaviour or mere existence; and therefore I believe that I am a suitable candidate for this …show more content…
I am involved in the Community Wellness Service, initially a service launched by the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, in spreading the message of health and its importance. Since I am multi linguistic, speaking and understanding about four languages, I felt that I was able to reach the heart of the community by translating and helping those especially in black minority ethnic backgrounds. Furthermore, I was able to use my linguistic skills in spreading awareness of optical health, since statistical data has shown that those of black minority ethnic groups exhibit greater risk of sight loss. The most cause for this is due to language barrier since they are not aware of early signs which could prevent sight loss and thus I hope I had an impact in spreading the message of sight loss in black minority ethnic groups. I have gained vital qualities and have further development my confidence and communication skills from these voluntary work.
One great aspect I like about integration is how my academic work can facilitate and fuel my understanding in the real world. As a volunteer for Learning 4 Age, I was able to work and engage with elderly at a local care home. I was able to observe how age can affect and alter one psychological state but more importantly, I was able to learn more about the residents as an individual rather than a mere subject. Furthermore, I
