In shaping the Middle East as we know it today, the greatest role was played by Britain and France. The first phenomenon that is direct consequence of the colonial times is political systems. In the hundred years since the creation of such the Middle East, no country has become a genuine democracy in the Western sense, except, perhaps after the Arab Spring, Tunisia.
