Some may think that the death of few people may not cause a war, but the slaughter of 17 American soldiers caused the US to react in a barbaric way. A battle called Thorntons Affair is a battle that may have sparked the war with Mexico. The US was in the leadership of James K. Polk during the Mexican-American War. The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because, the US invaded California and Texas, the agreed border of Texas and Mexico after the Texan Revolution was the Nueces river, and the US was being rude and provoking Mexico into going to war.

In a Magazine article the US claimed that “Mexico Never can Exert any real government authority” (O’Sullivin 323. The US was claiming mexico was bad at governing. Polk sent “Troops … across from the city of Matamoros” (Velasco-Marquez 327), A Mexican city on the border of the Rio Grande. The US sent troops along with John Sidel when trying to buy California (Roden 317). This may seem like just a precaution but some may see it as if the US are threatening Mexico. In the same newspaper article where the US claimed Mexico can not Govern it stated that the country needs to grow so they can hold their population (O’Sullivan 323). It stated this even though the state of Texas was not as filled up as it could be. The evidence shown clearly stated that the US was not justified in going to war because the US was provoking and being rude to Mexico. The US, claiming Mexico was a country that can not govern and claiming the US needed land was being selfish.
On the other hand some people may say the US was justified in going to war with Mexico. This point of view makes sense because Mexico was still claiming Texas was not owned by the US.
