The Metropolitan Museum Analysis

While attending an art museum called “The Metropolitan” in New York City, I discovered many interesting portraits, sculptures, and much more artwork of all times. One of the portraits that had caught my eye was called Spring Time by Pierre-Auguste Cot. He painted this portrait in 1873 and it was now found at The Metropolitan Museum. The material that was used is called oil on canvas, according to the tag that was placed by this painting. Unfortunately, the size of the painting was not listed on the right side tag of the portrait, but it was a nice big painting. As I continue with this paper, I will be discussing into details about this painting using the four steps of writing an art criticism, also known as the Feldman’s Method. Interpretation in art has to do with trying to think about some ideas that an artwork is trying to portray. It means to think or brainstorm some stories that is behind the painting, trying to identify what the artist was thinking at that moment and the reason for it. Many interpretations can be made just by looking at this painting itself. The first interpretation that can be noticed is the two young couples sitting on the swings. They seem to be gazing into each other's eyes as if they could be in love. Usually when two couples stare into each other's eyes like the way these two couples were painted, could be that they are in love. Another interpretation would have to be the relationship with the title and the painting. The title spring time can be easily seen in this painting due to the wet clothes that these two people have. The clothes seem wet because of the way it was painted on. The breasts of the women can be easily seen through her dress as if the dress was wet. In spring there are a lot of rain showers which can easily interpret the title along with the painting. The title is also used as a representation of the colors as …show more content…
Many different elements can be seen throughout the entire painting. Some of the principles and elements that I caught in this painting were colors, texture, value, shapes, and lines. One of the few things that I enjoyed about this picture was looking at the colors. The colors brings out a lot of meaning to a painting whether its love, hate, sadness, or much more. When observing colors especially, I like to think about how many colors was used and how they were used. Whether they used dark tones or light tones, finding the meaning to why the painter decided to use that form of painting, it means that there is something about that story that makes it valuable. When using colors that happen to look shiny, I see it as a form that it is the most important part of the entire painting. For example, the clothes that were painted on the female and male, where shinny, making in the main focuses that brings my attention. This shinny portion makes the clothes on these two people look wet as if it was raining and they were soaked. I noticed that the breast for the female was showing as I mentioned earlier, making it clearer that the reason why it was see through, was because of the weather. Since the title is called Spring Time, I can imagine that the cause of the wet clothes would be due to rain since in spring rains more than any other season. In addition, Cot did an amazing job on this

This paper will be describing and critiquing the Japanese art galleries in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Beginning their collection in the 1880s, the Met now carries an extensive compilation of the Japanese arts. With over 200 works of various compositions including folding screens, ceramics, scrolls, and clothing, this ten-room exhibit explores ancient Japan to the 21st century. Housed in the Eastern Asian section of the Met, the Japanese installation is nestled in a very long but smaller gallery, in comparison to the larger ones of this museum. Upon entering the gallery from the American wing, the visitor is greeted with a small dimly lit room.…

Bring Them Home: Benin Art, Universal Museum and Artifact Repatriation Nigeria, the Giant of Africa, earned its title in terms of its geographic size, population size and economic growth. It is also popular for producing a vast majority of West-African art. According to Shyllon (1998), of all the countries south of the Sahara, Nigeria dominates in the production of sculptured antiquities as it possesses nine-tenths of sculptures aged at greater than a century. The ancient city of Benin in Southern Nigeria has been revered as a source of bronze and ivory sculptures so elegantly crafted that Meyerowitz (1943) describes them as technically perfect. However, after the Benin Massacre and artifact looting of 1897, thousands of these sculptures were…

When I set out to the Metropolitan Museum in New York I did not expect to have as much fun as I did, nor did I expect to be there for over six hours. The Metropolitan has a vast collection and some of the most unique artifacts I can ever remember seeing at a museum. From the Greek and Roman art, to the sarcophaguses from Roman and Egyptian lands, it even has a reconstructed pyramid, and I didn't even get to experience more than half of the artifacts. One enormous piece that caught my attention, centered in the middle of the Greek and Roman art on the main floor was a marble sarcophagus lid.…

The Jewish museum follows a model of three major themes that run throughout Jewish history. One of the themes is tradition and the reinterpretation of traditions. We have seen this in our class when it came to the Rabbinate's & Karaites, the Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes, and the different Rabbi interpretations or the Torah, Talmud, or Mishnah such as Rabbi Rashi or Rabbi Akiva. Throughout the museum, there were copies of the Torah in different structures such as the scroll made of parchment or a codex. There was a Torah that was on a scroll made of parchment written in ink from Tunisia in 1837.…

Ambrose, who spent many years covering, researching and writing about the war. The site, as well as the museum, is managed by the staff with the help of many outside volunteers under the close watch of its board of trustees’. The museum has many collaborations and partnerships with other museums and universities. This collaboration allows the museum the opportunity to constantly change and continually update the exhibits.…

The Metropolitan museum of art is a place where history can be seen in many unique depictions. The Metropolitan Museum of art, also known as the MET, "presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy." On Tuesday, December 28, 2016 I had the chance to go to the MET with my friends Reyna and Zach. When we explored the museum we came across a christmas tree, a glass ceiling, and paintings of George Washington, the Hudson River, the Civil War, and American-Indian & Western. The museum gave me a chance to explore different periods of history through the eyes of many different artists.…

Collection on Display The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), located in the center of Manhattan, has positioned itself as a museum of international significance. Reflect of that is its mission to collect, preserve, study and exhibit art of high level in order to give its visitors, which are mainly tourists, both foreign and domestic, a general understanding of what is universal high culture. With this purpose in mind, the Met dedicates the first and second floor of its separated, renovated and enlarged building to exhibit the reconceived New American Wing Galleries for Painting, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts , “one of the finest and most comprehensive [collection] in the world” on American art. When I first came to New York City and learned that the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) presents more than-2000 education/public programs, I was shocked to the various and wide range of the programs that the Met offers. I cannot help but so jealous of American (especially New Yorker) kids and teenagers, as they have a myriad of opportunities to reach out to the world of art with those programs. Since I am already in my mid 20s, it was too late for me to restart my life and got a lot of accesses to the art world through the museum’s teen programs. I wish I could have same chances in my childhood, but I have not, and it is how I became interested in supporting the MetTeens programs and events, as it would be the only opportunity that I can experience…
