Extraction was the main method of removing compounds from the sample. The component X was removed from the sample by first adding the organic solvent dichloromethane to the test tube. After aggravation, the component X dissolved into the solvent. Since components Y and Z were insoluble in the organic solvent they remained as solids. The test tube was then placed into a centrifuge and ran for thirty seconds. By doing so, the unsettled solid were forced to accumulate at the bottom of the test tube. This allowed for a more effective decantation of aqueous solution that contained component X onto the watch glass. Repetition of this extraction processes ensured that most of component X was separated from the sample. Once three washes were done, the aqueous …show more content…
It should be noted that very small amounts of liquid were present on the watch glass. Afterwards, the same process was done for component Y with water instead of dichloromethane and decanted into a crucible and cover. It was apparent for both the removal of component X and component Y that the aqueous solution could not be removed from the test tube in entirety. After three washes, the crucible and cover was heated to evaporate the water. Similarly the crucible and cover were weighed and the difference between the clean crucible and the crucible with sample gave component Y’s mass, and from that the percent composition of the sample of Y. The remaining substance in the test tube was heated to evaporate any remaining solvents. The test tube and solid was measured. This solid ideally should be mainly component Z. However after the third wash with water for component Y, the remaining solid sample seemed to dissolve completely into the water. After heating and evaporation of the water, no solid was observed at the bottom of the test
