The transformation of one person affects not only the individual but the others who surround that individual .This theory is displayed throughout Franz Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis. In this novella, many different interpretations are present. There are countless hidden meanings throughout the story and each one could send critics into a frenzy. One day Gregor becomes attracted to his door and decides to look out of the cracks of the door. He notices that a bowl of milk is sitting there with slices of bread in it. Gregor knows that Grete is the one who places the bowl there because she knows that milk is his favorite beverage. However, because of his transformation he no longer likes milk. “... she brought him a wide assortment of things, all spread out on an old newspaper…” (23). After she returns to his room she realizes that he no longer likes milk so she decides that she needs to bring him a broader variation of food. “If Gregor had only been able to speak to his sister and thank her for everything she had to do for him, he could have accepted her services more easily...” (28). Gregor loves Grete and realizes that he has caused her to work harder than she ever has and all he wants is for her to know that he appreciates her and everything that she does for him. The novella is about a young man transforming into a monstrous vermin. However, the real transformation is the one of Gregor’s sister, Grete. She is the only person who Gregor looks for in the beginning stages of his transformation. As time goes on she realizes that she has to put in hours of work to care for her ill brother, even though her brother was the income of the household and the reason that they were able to live there.
