Theme Of Love In The Merchant Of Venice

After reading the text, The Merchant of Venice, I was able to identify the key elements to the story. One of the themes that was major and most appealing to me throughout the story was that the power of love is always greater than all of the other feelings in the world. This theme is shown through the text in many quotes and out of these many quotes, three strong quotes support my theme of the subject, love. To begin with, the major characters that the story revolves around are Antonio and Bassanio. The love in their friendship which is mainly played out by Antonio is very powerful. The quote:
“Give me your hand, Bassanio: fare you well! Grieve not that I am fallen to this for you; For herein Fortune shows herself more kind Than

To start, when the readers are first introduced to both of the characters we are able to know that Lorenzo is a Christian while Jessica is a Jew. However, the story shows that their love is not defined by their religion, but by the strength of it. Being people from different religions they don’t give up on their feelings and they decide to become bound to one another in the bond of marriage. Especially in this section of the scene I found these lines to be the most powerful regarding love because they expose her identity and also her intentions of marriage with Lorenzo. She talks about how it doesn’t matter whether she is a Jew and the fact that her father being proud of their religion would mind. During this time, she only thinks about her love. During the dialogue, Jessica also says that she would change her religion after her marriage with Lorenzo and become a Christian from a Jew. This represents the powerful love that is built between these two people because she is able to forsake her religion and her family only to get his love. Later on in the story this strong bond of love cannot be broken by any other forces like her father, regret, guilt, or even religion. This is why I think this quote is a representation of my theme of powerful love. Lastly, I was able to relate my theme to the love that is shown between Bassanio and Portia. The lines that I could find in the text represented the powerful love between the couple when Portia is the one speaking. The quote that I have found as an example is “First go with me to church and call me wife, and then away to Venice to your friend! For never shall you lie by Portia 's side. With an unquiet soul. “(III, ii, 316-319.) I chose these lines to support my theme for the following reason. This quote that Portia says, relates to my theme because it shows that she is letting her to-be husband go and save his best friend even if they have
