“The Men Who Built America” is a documentary sires that portrays the lives of some of the most powerful men in American history. These men were able to use management styles that allowed for monumental economic impacts. Their motivation for power allowed Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford to be some of the richest men in U.S. history. These men’s actions and impacts have fascinated the business world in many aspects. Their businesses and managerial styles stood the test of time, and continue to flourish in America’s economy. These men took on the challenge of perfecting transportation and energy usage at a time that was novice to these ideas. Without the advancements made throughout history by the men who built America, our society today would be completely altered.

Rockefeller. Like Vanderbilt, Rockefeller was also born in New York growing up in a fairly poor family. In 1853, the Rockefeller family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where John attended high school and studied bookkeeping at a commercial college. He first started business in a partnership, owning a commission firm. In 1863, Rockefeller and a few partners started to invest in the quickly uprising oil industry. Through borrowing money, Rockefeller was able to buy out his partners in 1865. By doing this he was able to create one of the largest oil refineries in Cleveland. The year 1870 gave birth to the industries giant Standard Oil created by Vanderbilt, his brother, and a few others. Rockefeller was the president of the company. The company was so successful that Rockefeller was soon able to buy out most of his competition eventually creating the Standard Oil
